Tombow MONO graph Lite: the 0.5mm pencil and 0.5mm ballpoint need different refills

MONO graph Lite 0.5mm can describe two different writing systems. A lead refill for the mechanical pencil cannot replace an ink refill for the ballpoint, even though the family name and number look familiar.

Tombow Europe’s SH-MGL14 record identifies a 0.5mm mechanical pencil with a 4mm metal tip and eraser. Tombow Japan’s English MONO graph Lite ballpoint page instead lists 0.38mm and 0.5mm ball diameters and ink-refill codes.

Item Meaning of the number or code
SH-MGL14 pencil, 0.5mm Compatible graphite-lead diameter.
Ballpoint, 0.5mm Ball diameter; not a 0.5mm graphite lead.
BR-KNE33 Listed black ink refill for the 0.5mm ballpoint.
ER-MGL MONO graph Lite mechanical-pencil eraser refill.

Read the consumable before ordering

The ballpoint page lists BR-KNU33 for its 0.38mm black refill and BR-KNE33 for 0.5mm black. Blue and red have their own codes. An order that says only black MONO graph Lite refill leaves the relevant size and writing system unresolved.

The ER-MGL page identifies a three-piece eraser pack for the mechanical pencil. It is not an ink refill or confirmation that every eraser in the broader MONO range fits. Keep the specific host model with the spare-part record.

The two 0.5mm marks are not line-width equivalents

Tombow lists an approximate 0.26mm written line for the 0.5mm ballpoint. That illustrates why a ball diameter should not be read as the result on paper. Graphite diameter, ball diameter and actual written line belong in separate fields.

We would identify the pen or pencil first, then select its genuine specified consumable. Choosing a barrel colour or a familiar 0.5 number first is an easy way to buy the right-looking spare for the wrong mechanism.
