The XL label alone does not identify the paper inside a Canson book or pad. Product line, format and region matter when comparing a watercolour practice book with a mixed-media sketchbook.
Canson’s cited XL Watercolour page lists cold-pressed 300gsm paper. Its XL Book Mixed Media page lists light-grain 160gsm paper and 120 pages across 60 sheets. The US XL Mixed Media range lists 160g and a 300g option qualified as sheets only.

| XL Book Mixed Media | 160gsm, light grain | 60 sheets / 120 pages |

Do not turn grammage into a whole-book weight
Grams per square metre describes the paper’s mass per area. It is not the weight of the bound book, the thickness in millimetres, or a direct measure of how much paint a page accepts. Covers, binding, sheet size and count all affect what you carry.
Likewise, 120 pages does not mean 120 separate sheets. In the named Mixed Media book, Canson explicitly gives 60 sheets. If a project needs removable originals, count physical sheets and confirm the relevant binding or perforation rather than use the page total.
Match the surface to the intended work
The maker lists both wet and dry techniques for Mixed Media, and watercolour for the Watercolour line. That is useful product positioning, but not a controlled comparison of buckling, lifting, erasing or pigment behaviour. Heavier paper is not automatically the better choice for every pen sketch or travel notebook.
We would identify the exact local stock code, surface, grammage, dimensions and sheet count before comparing prices. For a new technique, an appropriately identified sample is more informative than assuming a different XL product will behave like a familiar old book.
Three manufacturer regional records checked 24 October 2026. No painting, paper-thickness, erasing or durability test; no claim that all regional XL packages share one formulation. Related: product comparisons.
