Magnetic storage does not mean wireless charging, and tilt does not mean pressure sensitivity. These distinctions are central when comparing Apple Pencil (USB-C) with Apple Pencil Pro.
Apple’s Pencil comparison gives both models tilt support, but pressure sensitivity only to Pro. It describes wireless pairing and charging for Pro; the USB-C model pairs and charges through a USB-C connection. The latter can attach magnetically for storage without turning that attachment into a charger.
| Task or feature | Pencil USB-C | Pencil Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Tilt input | Supported | Supported |
| Pressure sensitivity | Not listed as supported | Supported |
| Charging route | USB-C cable | Wireless on a compatible iPad |
| Compatibility | Check each model’s exact iPad list; the lists differ. | |
Choose the iPad before choosing the feature
Record the iPad’s complete model and generation. A USB-C socket on the tablet does not mean it accepts every Pencil with USB-C somewhere in its name or charging system. Pro has its own compatibility list; a feature advantage is irrelevant if the pen does not work with the intended iPad.
For note-taking or annotation, ask which app functions you actually use. For drawing, decide whether varying the stroke through pressure is a required part of the workflow. Tilt support alone does not establish that capability, and an app’s own tool settings can also affect the visible result.
Include the charging routine
The USB-C Pencil specification lists the Pencil itself as the box content and states iPadOS 17.1.1 or later. Plan access to the appropriate charging cable rather than assume every pen package supplies one. Recheck current compatibility and software requirements for the exact tablet before purchase.
We would choose around compatibility, needed input behaviour and the acceptable charging routine in that order. Someone who values magnetic storage may still be comfortable with cable charging; someone who needs pressure-sensitive drawing should not treat a lower-priced, tilt-capable pen as functionally identical.
Apple comparison and Ireland specification checked 24 October 2026. No drawing, latency, battery or app test. Hover and other model-dependent features require their own compatible-device checks. Related: the 11-inch M5 iPad Pro configuration record.
