The instax mini 12 removes many camera settings, but it does not remove the need to choose the correct shooting distance. This is an important distinction for a first instant-camera purchase: simple operation and consistently satisfying pictures are related, but they are not the same promise.
The distance choice the camera still asks you to make
Fujifilm’s mini 12 product page describes automatic exposure and a lens twist for Close-up mode. The North American English manual specifies normal photography from 0.5m and Close-up mode at 30–50cm. In dim conditions it also advises holding the camera firmly because the shutter can be slow.
A close-up setting is therefore not a general “better detail” switch. It corresponds to a particular subject distance. When comparing cameras, consider whether the person receiving the camera will recognise that distinction.
Enthusiasm and frustration can both be informative
In a first-camera conversation, a mini 12 owner praises its ease of use and their personal reliability experience. In a separate mini 12 help thread, the original poster is disappointed by blurry pictures; a respondent says they have accidentally left Close-up mode on for a normal-distance shot.
The second thread contains additional speculative advice. We use the reported experience, not the speculation, to identify a question for the manual. The comments do not diagnose the original poster’s camera, prove a defect rate or guarantee that changing a setting will resolve every blurry image.
A better first-session plan
Before spending film on an important event, read the mode instructions and choose a few ordinary subjects at clearly different distances. Record which mode was selected and the approximate distance for each picture. This gives you a useful record if you later ask for support; a photograph alone may leave those details unknown.
For a gift, include the correct manual and explain the two modes rather than promising that every frame will succeed. If the intended user wants to inspect and choose an image before printing, compare that requirement with a separately documented hybrid-camera workflow instead.
Our view: the mini 12 is worth considering for straightforward instant photography when the distance choice is understood. Keep aesthetic preference, handling and the cost of learning with film in the buying decision rather than translating one owner’s praise into a universal image-quality claim.
