Canon SELPHY QX20 paper formats: check the sheet size before planning a print

Canon SELPHY QX20’s “square format” label should not be read as a claim that the whole sheet is square. Canon’s specification lists XS-20L sticker paper at 72 by 85 millimetres and XC-20L card-size sticker paper at 54 by 85 millimetres. Check the sheet, intended image and mounting space as three different dimensions.

Scope: SELPHY QX20 and the XS-20L/XC-20L sets named in Canon’s English product manual, specification D338-020, checked 3 October 2026. The manual is model documentation rather than a country-specific retail offer. Local bundle contents and consumable availability are not established here.

Which dimension belongs in your project?

A scrapbook pocket, luggage-label holder or display mount constrains the complete physical print. A photograph’s crop is a separate creative choice. Calling one format “square” does not settle either the available printed-image layout or the outer clearance of a holder. Retain the manual’s paper dimensions with your project drawing and check the app’s supported layout before promising a particular finished result.

Documented set Paper dimension Use in a buying record
XS-20L 72 × 85 mm Record the complete sheet size, despite the square-format description.
XC-20L 54 × 85 mm Match the narrower sheet to the mounting space.

Canon also specifies SELPHY Photo Layout version 4.0.0 or later for iOS and Android. That is a documented application requirement; it is not proof that a particular phone currently meets every operating-system or regional app-store condition. Check your actual device before buying a printer for an event.

Plan an album spread before buying consumables

Sketch the page using measured pocket or mount dimensions. Put a rectangle representing the full paper sheet in each proposed position. Decide where a caption will live and whether the project calls for adhesive placement or removable storage. This exercise can expose a format mismatch without inventing a print sample or judging colors you have not seen.

Next, choose a representative source image and inspect its composition. A face near the edge or a wide group shot presents a different cropping question from a centered object. Keep the original file, intended crop and chosen paper set together in the project record. Do not assume that switching paper formats preserves every part of the same composition.

A set identity is more useful than a family name

Write QX20 and the consumable code on the shopping list. A listing that says only “SELPHY paper” leaves compatibility unresolved. Ask the seller to identify the set and its supported printer rather than relying on a similar box color or brand logo. No compatibility with another SELPHY series is asserted by this guide.

For a shared printer, give each project a named format and a quantity estimate. That is a planning estimate rather than a claim about waste-free printing. Record whether the offer is the printer alone or a bundle, and retain the seller’s statement about included sets. If it cannot be matched to a primary compatibility record, mark it Needs editor verification.

Editorial assessment

We would choose the physical mounting format before comparing convenience claims. A photograph can look attractive in a promotional image while the sheet does not fit the intended holder. That judgment concerns selection order, not a tested verdict on print quality, adhesive longevity or color accuracy. No such testing was performed. Source dimensions are manufacturer specifications, not our measurements. See the Editorial Policy for attribution and correction practice.
