When an Avery label sheet prints a progressively smaller layout, check scaling before editing every label. A printer dialog can resize an otherwise correct PDF, leaving a design problem that manual nudging will not consistently solve.
In its US shipping-label print tips, Avery directs users to select Letter paper and a custom scale of 100%, unless the specific program has different instructions. That is guidance for the relevant US sheet workflow, not an instruction to change an A4 product into Letter.
Record the print path
| Check | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Physical product | Correct sheet product and printer type. |
| Correct template and page size. | |
| Print dialog | Paper size and requested scaling. |
| Printer properties | Permitted label or heavier-media setting. |
Avery also points users to the system printer dialog for media-type selection and, where available, manual feeding one sheet at a time. Follow the actual printer’s label-media instructions; do not assume every tray or duplex path is suitable.
Separate resizing from a constant shift
Inspect whether the distance between printed labels is changing relative to the sheet or whether the whole layout appears offset by a similar amount. That observation helps describe the fault when seeking support. It does not by itself prove a printer calibration diagnosis.
Retain the PDF and a note of the settings used for a small appropriate proof. Change one setting at a time so the result is interpretable. Repeatedly moving artwork while also changing paper size and scaling makes it difficult to know which change helped.
We would establish the physical sheet, template and scaling first, then investigate any remaining alignment issue using the manufacturer instructions. The aim is a repeatable print record rather than a layout adjusted to compensate for an unknown print setting.
