Nite Ize Gear Tie lengths: measure the bundle before choosing a pack

Choose a Gear Tie by the bundle you need to organize, not by the biggest length in the range. Extra length has to go somewhere, while too little leaves no useful working ends.

The Nite Ize Gear Tie Original record describes a bendable wire interior with a rubber exterior. It gives examples ranging from three-inch ties for small cords to longer versions for larger bundles. The same page explicitly says the product is not weight rated.

Manufacturer example Starting length to investigate
Small computer cords and earbud cables 3 inches.
Medium to long cords 6 inches.
Larger appliance-cord and similar bundles 12 inches.

Use a length worksheet

Arrange the cable in the shape in which it will be stored, following the cable maker’s care guidance. Use a loose piece of string to estimate the route around the bundle, then leave room for the tie’s working ends. Compare that requirement with the actual length in the selected pack. This is a selection aid, not an engineering formula or a prescribed tightening force.

Write down the bundle, chosen length and quantity. A desk with many small leads may need more short ties rather than a few very long ones. Different colour packs can help identify equipment, but a colour is not an electrical or load rating.

Keep organization separate from load restraint

The product page’s many suggested uses should not be converted into a kilogram limit. Preserve its warning to avoid sharp edges, hot or abrasive surfaces and shifting loads. This article concerns organizing ordinary stored cords; it does not recommend suspension, transport restraint, climbing or any safety-critical application.

We would buy for a written bundle list and check one representative fit before choosing a large pack. That is more useful than assuming one tie length will suit every drawer, charger and cable.
