The VideoMic GO II’s 3.5mm socket is not doing the same job in every setup. RODE’s guide distinguishes its analogue camera output from headphone monitoring when the microphone is used through USB.
The official VideoMic GO II user guide describes a 3.5mm TRS camera connection and a USB-C connection for compatible digital hosts. In USB mode, the 3.5mm socket can provide headphone monitoring. The supplied SC14 cable is the documented TRS-to-TRS camera cable.
| Intended setup | Documented distinction |
|---|---|
| Analogue camera input | 3.5mm microphone-output path. |
| USB host | Digital audio path with 3.5mm headphone monitoring available. |
| USB processing adjustments | Not a stored replacement for analogue camera gain settings. |
Do not carry settings across the two paths
RODE says the digital processing controls are not accessible in 3.5mm mode. It also notes that input-gain or pad changes made through a RODE app are not retained when the microphone is used in that analogue mode.
A desktop test with a USB setting therefore does not prove that the microphone will produce the same adjusted level when moved to a camera’s analogue input. Check the actual recording path and its controls rather than assume the last app setting travels with the cable.
Build a kit for the destination
List the intended host, its supported input, the required cable and where monitoring will occur. A cable included for one destination may not be the complete arrangement for another. Follow RODE’s compatible-device and power guidance rather than treat a shared plug shape as sufficient.
We would choose the connection route first, then confirm monitoring and level controls in that route. This is a workflow distinction for GO II, not a claim about every RODE microphone or a listening comparison with the separate VideoMicro II.
