A USB-connected Z fc can be receiving operating power without charging its battery. Nikon documents those as separate states, so a charging plan should specify which one is required.
The current Z fc charging manual describes charging with the camera off. When USB power delivery is enabled and the camera is on, compatible external equipment can power the camera, but the battery does not charge in that operating state. A battery must remain inserted.
| State | Documented distinction |
|---|---|
| Camera off, approved charging arrangement | Battery charging. |
| Camera on, USB power delivery enabled | Operating power; not simultaneous battery charging. |
| EN-EL25a battery choice | Camera firmware C:1.50 or later is required. |
Plan for the session and the next session
For a long recording or tethered session, identify the documented operating-power arrangement. Afterwards, include a separate opportunity to recharge the battery. Leaving a cable connected during operation should not be treated as proof that the battery will be full when unplugged.
The EN-EL25a firmware note also matters when purchasing a spare for an older body. Keep the installed camera version beside the battery model rather than assume that a similarly named battery automatically removes every compatibility requirement.
The connector is only part of the specification
Nikon’s third-party-adapter section specifies USB PD, a Type-C connector and output of 15W at 5V/3A or more, with a Type-C cable at both ends. It does not guarantee every third-party adapter and cable. A familiar plug shape alone is not enough to establish the complete arrangement.
We would record camera firmware, battery, adapter and cable together, then follow the model’s current instructions. This is a purchase-planning distinction, not a recommendation to modify power equipment or ignore an abnormal charging indication.
