Elgato Cam Link 4K used or new: identify the generation before expecting 4K60

Cam Link 4K is a family name that now spans different 4K frame-rate limits. Check the actual device generation before buying used hardware or expecting 60-frame capture from a familiar product name.

Elgato’s current product record and FAQ identifies model number 20GAM9903 on the underside as the latest model. It says that model supports 4K60 with compatible cameras, while earlier Cam Link 4K models are limited to 4K30. The current resolution list qualifies 4K60 as MJPG only.

Check What to retain
Device generation Actual underside model number, not only a shop title.
Target capture mode Resolution, frame rate and applicable format.
Computer connection Required USB 3.0 path.
Camera output A compatible unencrypted HDMI signal.

Ask for the actual label

For a used purchase, request a clear photograph of the device’s model marking. A listing copied from the current shop page may describe a newer revision than the item being sold. A retail SKU and the model number printed on the device are different identifiers; preserve the one Elgato uses for the generation check.

Trace the complete signal path

The computer port requirement is separate from the camera’s output. Elgato specifies USB 3.0 whether the host connector is Type-A or Type-C, and its HDMI support article says HDCP-protected signals cannot be received. This is a compatibility condition, not an instruction to bypass protection.

Check the exact camera’s clean output, desired mode and power arrangement. Cam Link does not supply camera charging, so a longer session needs an independently approved camera-power plan.

We would identify the hardware first, then verify the intended camera-to-computer mode. This avoids both outdated claims that every Cam Link 4K is limited to 30fps and an unsupported promise that every used unit can do 60fps.
