CHEMEX three-cup filters: why the unfolded half moon is a separate refill choice

A familiar CHEMEX name does not make every filter box the same refill. The three-cup brewers and FUNNEX have a specific half-moon option that should remain visible in the order.

The maker’s unfolded half-moon page identifies FP-2 and FP-2N in its FAQ. Its compatibility list includes Three Cup Classic CM-1C, Three Cup Handblown CM-1, Three Cup Glass Handle CM-1GH and FUNNEX CM-FNX. The cited package contains 100 filters.

Use the compatibility list before the shape preference

First record the brewer’s exact model. Then select the documented filter family. Finally consider colour, folding and package quantity. A preference for square corners or a flush circular edge should not replace the model check.

The same page discusses circular, square, pre-folded and unfolded choices, but explicitly explains that the half-moon filters for three-cup and FUNNEX products are supplied unfolded because of their design and size. That is a meaningful preparation difference, not merely a colour option.

Include preparation in a starter kit

Someone accustomed to dropping a ready-made cone into a brewer may need to learn the half-moon fold. Use CHEMEX’s own illustrated or video instructions, including its orientation at the spout, rather than improvise around the appearance of another filter.

For a gift, identify both the brewer and the matching paper in the shopping list. A complete-looking glass brewer without its intended filters can leave the recipient unable to follow the maker’s brewing method. Conversely, a large refill box is not a complete coffeemaker.

Our choice would be the exact documented filter for the actual brewer, with enough time to learn its preparation. We have not compared taste, flow or competing papers, and do not adopt broad health or purity claims from marketing copy. Fit and workflow are the useful verified distinctions here.
