Platinum Preppy 02, 03 and 05: keep the nib designation attached to the model

Preppy’s colour is not a complete nib specification. The 02, 03 and 05 labels should remain attached to the exact pen when comparing Platinum Preppy listings.

Platinum’s Japan PSQ-400 page lists 02 Extra Fine. Its PSQ-300 page lists 03 Fine and 05 Medium. Both describe an ST-27 stainless-steel nib and a polycarbonate body. The common family name does not remove the nib choice.

Choose around actual handwriting

Think about the space available for the writing: a small calendar box, a ruled notebook or a larger drawing. A finer designation may be relevant to compact writing, but it is not a measurement of the line you will obtain with every ink, paper and hand pressure.

If you can make an authorised trial, use the intended paper and compare a few ordinary words rather than a single decorative stroke. For replacements, record the code and designation alongside the barrel colour. A multipack image may show colours without making every nib selection obvious.

The cap feature answers a different question

Platinum’s Preppy brand page describes its cap-sealing mechanism as limiting ink drying while capped, including a one-year maker claim. That feature does not select the nib size or establish the life of the pen under all storage conditions. We have not repeated the manufacturer’s storage test.

We would choose the nib designation first and then confirm the actual package’s cartridge and any separately required accessories. Do not assume all colours or special editions offer all three nibs in every market, or that another brand’s Fine designation will produce an identical result.
