WIDE film offers a larger image, but it also changes the shape you are composing for. That matters when choosing between instax mini Link 3 and the original Link WIDE for a group photograph, a portrait or a page layout.
The official German mini Link 3 specification lists an 86 × 54mm film sheet with a 62 × 46mm image. The Singapore original Link WIDE page lists a 99 × 62mm image and WIDE film. This comparison does not substitute specifications for Link WIDE 2, mini Link+ or a hybrid camera.
| Image-window calculation | mini | WIDE |
|---|---|---|
| Long edge × short edge | 62 × 46mm | 99 × 62mm |
| Area, calculated | 2,852mm² | 6,138mm² |
| Long-to-short ratio, calculated | About 1.35:1 | About 1.60:1 |
Those calculations use the maker’s image dimensions, excluding the border. WIDE has about 2.15 times the image area; this is a geometry comparison, not a claim of twice the sharpness, detail or value.
Preview the picture that matters
Choose a representative portrait and a representative group or landscape photo. View the intended crop for each format before committing to a printer. A larger area may help a group composition, but a different aspect ratio can still remove content at the edges unless the layout is adjusted.
For a journal or display, make two paper rectangles matching the image windows and place them in the intended space. Add the actual film’s outside dimensions when evaluating pockets or frames; the image window is not the whole object.
Keep film and app requirements attached
mini Link 3 uses mini film and the documented mobile workflow; original Link WIDE uses WIDE film and its companion app. Film availability, current phone compatibility and the actual printer package should be checked separately from the geometry.
Our choice would depend on the pictures and their destination, not a universal bigger-is-better rule. This format comparison offers no print-quality ranking: colour, exposure and perceived sharpness require actual prints under comparable conditions.
