CalDigit TS4 port planning: the front 20W USB-C socket is not a video output

A TS4 USB-C port’s charging wattage does not tell you that it carries a monitor signal. CalDigit distinguishes the dock’s USB-C data ports from its Thunderbolt connections, although their plugs look similar.

The TS4 support specification lists three Thunderbolt 4 connections, including the host connection, and three separate USB-C 10Gb/s connections. The manual says the USB 3.2 Type-C ports are for data, while Thunderbolt Type-C supports data and video.

TS4 connection Role to keep distinct
Thunderbolt host Connects the dock to the computer; not another free peripheral socket.
Downstream Thunderbolt Documented data and video route, subject to host and display compatibility.
USB-C 10Gb/s USB data; the front 20W charging feature does not add video.
DisplayPort 1.4 Dedicated display connection, with host-dependent limits.

Draw the connections before buying cables

Start with the computer and its host cable. Then assign each intended peripheral a route: storage, keyboard, phone or monitor. This exposes a common planning mistake—counting the host socket as available for another accessory and counting a data-only USB-C socket as a display output.

CalDigit lists 15W for each downstream Thunderbolt connection and 20W for the front USB-C connection. The larger charging number on the latter does not make it a substitute for the former. Charging and display capability are independent fields.

A port map is only the first compatibility check

After choosing the intended display route, confirm the actual host model, supported display arrangement, monitor input and required cable or adapter. The dock’s port inventory alone cannot establish that an arbitrary laptop drives a particular number of displays at a desired resolution.

For desk planning, we would label cables by role rather than connector shape: host, display and USB data. It makes moving a phone cable harmless to the layout while keeping a monitor cable attached to the connection that actually provides its intended function.
