A marker labelled non-permanent is not necessarily a dry-erase whiteboard marker. STAEDTLER’s Lumocolor 316 illustrates why the removal method needs to be part of the purchase, rather than an assumption attached to the word “erasable.”
The U.S. 316 WP6 product page specifies water-soluble ink, damp-cloth removal from film and a fine line of approximately 0.6mm. The page separately uses a wet-wipe description for many smooth surfaces. It does not establish dry removal from every board, coating or porous material.
Write down what “temporary” means
For a reusable planning sheet, temporary may mean leaving a note in place for a week and deliberately removing it with a damp cloth. For a presentation board, it may mean changing a sentence immediately with a dry eraser. These are different tasks even if both involve writing that is not intended to last.
Identify the surface by the manufacturer’s description. “Plastic” is too broad when one object is coated, another is porous or textured, and a third has a special writing surface. The marker’s general surface claim should not replace the surface maker’s care instructions.
A compact selection record
- Surface: exact reusable sheet, board or other item and its care guidance.
- Mark duration: how long the writing needs to remain.
- Removal: dry eraser, damp cloth or another explicitly permitted method.
- Line: whether the documented fine width suits the size of the writing.
- Reference: the complete pen number, including 316 rather than a similar Lumocolor model.
If the combination is not documented, use an appropriate inconspicuous trial only where the surface instructions permit it, or ask the manufacturer. Do not test on valuable artwork, a device screen or another critical surface merely because a general description says “universal.”
Where the 316 makes sense
Our view: consider it when water-soluble, intentionally wet-wiped writing matches the actual task and surface. If immediate dry erasing is the essential requirement, compare a product explicitly documented for that method. This is a selection distinction, not a claim about stain resistance, chemical safety or removal from an untested material.
