Epson EcoTank ET-2850: automatic two-sided printing is not batch scanning

A printer that automatically prints both sides of a sheet does not necessarily feed a stack of originals into its scanner. The Epson EcoTank ET-2850 illustrates why these tasks belong on separate lines of a home-office buying checklist.

Epson Australia’s ET-2850 back-catalogue specifications list automatic two-sided printing, a colour flatbed scanner and a dash for automatic document feeder capacity. That specification describes a different input workflow from putting a pile of originals into an ADF. It is not a statement about every EcoTank model or every printer with “2850” in its name.

Describe the original, not just the desired PDF

“I need a PDF of these papers” leaves out much of the work. Record whether the originals are loose sheets, double-sided pages, book pages or a mixture. Then record how often you need to do the task and whether somebody can remain beside the scanner.

For a flatbed workflow, someone must place the originals on the glass and change them as needed. Software may help assemble a document, but that does not physically feed or turn the originals. A print-duplex feature solves the output stage and should not be counted again as an input-stage feature.

Your task Feature to check
Print a two-sided handout Automatic two-sided printing, with the intended media and settings.
Capture an occasional page or book opening Flatbed suitability and original dimensions.
Digitise repeated stacks of loose pages Document-feeder support and its permitted originals.
Digitise both sides in a batch The scanner’s own two-sided feeding method, separately from print duplex.

Do not turn the table into a claim that an ADF is always the better choice. Someone who scans a page occasionally may be satisfied with manual placement. Someone processing repeated stacks may find the handling time more important than a headline ink-yield figure.

A useful question for the seller

Describe one representative scan job and ask the seller to identify the exact steps for that model. If a demonstration is available, count the times the original has to be moved, rather than judging only the first page appearing on screen. That makes the hidden handling work visible without pretending to measure long-term reliability.
