Nintendo Switch 2 microSD Express: separate downloads, captures and save data

A memory-card upgrade for Nintendo Switch 2 does not move every kind of data onto the card. Nintendo requires microSD Express for expandable storage, while game save data stays in system memory. A card used by the original Switch has a limited screenshot/video-import role on Switch 2; it is not a substitute for a compatible expansion card.

Scope: Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, using Nintendo UK and Ireland English support documentation checked 2 October 2026. This is a buying and data-planning guide. No card was benchmarked, no console transfer was performed, and no current retail price or stock is claimed.

Separate three decisions

First decide whether you are buying more space for downloaded software, preserving existing captures, or managing game saves. Calling all three “storage” obscures the relevant limitation. Nintendo’s microSD Express FAQ distinguishes downloadable software, update data, DLC and captures from game save data, which cannot be copied or saved to an Express card.

Reader’s task Documented distinction Planning question
Add Switch 2 download storage microSD Express is required Does the exact card SKU identify the Express standard?
Bring original Switch captures over Import from the old microSD card is possible Which captures do you want to preserve, and where will you verify them?
Move game save data Save data remains in system memory Have you checked the separate console-transfer instructions?

The compatibility page supports Express cards up to 2TB and requires an internet system update on first use. It says Express cards used in the original Switch operate at conventional microSD speeds. A higher-capability card therefore does not establish a speed upgrade for that older console.

Buying the right identity rather than the right-looking package

Our editorial recommendation is to record the complete card model and capacity before comparing offers. Keep the manufacturer’s product record and the seller’s SKU together. If the listing says only “for Nintendo Switch”, ask which console and card standard it means. A familiar logo, colour or capacity cannot resolve a missing model identity.

For a family moving between consoles, a useful worksheet has separate columns for downloaded software, captures and save data. Name the intended destination in each column. That makes it harder to mistake copying a photo collection for completing a whole-console transfer.

A deliberate transfer check

  1. Inventory the items you want to retain before purchasing or changing the card setup.
  2. Read Nintendo’s current instructions for the actual console and transfer method; this buying guide is not a replacement for those steps.
  3. Keep the original materials until you have checked the intended destination. Do not delete or format a card merely because a new one has arrived.
  4. Record unresolved details as Needs editor verification, including the seller’s exact SKU, the card’s authenticity or an undocumented transfer scenario.

What this guide can and cannot conclude

We prefer a clear separation of data types over a universal “best card” ranking. That judgment concerns the buying process; it does not establish one card’s endurance, loading speed or reliability. There are no independent performance results here, and no claim that a larger card backs up game saves. Read our Editorial Policy for evidence limits and corrections.
